Message from the Education Committee

WAA members and non-members are encouraged to attend our monthly meetings at the New Hanover County Arboretum 6.30pm to 9pm on the second Thursday of the month, throughout the year, excepting the months of July and August.  We have interesting speakers and lots of member-to-member socializing.  Our workshops are another great benefit for you all.  Here's what is happening soon at WAA!

On Thursday May 14th we have printmaker Susan Baehmann speaking about the different types of printmaking, showing examples of prints and printmaking tools.  It promises to be a very educational evening as we get to learn about how these fascinating and time-consuming artworks are conceived and executed from an expert.  This is not your mother's giclee!

June is picnic time.  On June 11th we gather at Hugh MacRae Park, Shelter #5, at 5pm for the annual WAA Picnic.  Hot dogs, hamburgers, and delicious sides !  We have a still life set up for all to add their individual touch to a combined painting....it is great fun, and a super way to get to know members, old and new.

Two workshops, so far, have been organized in the next half-year.  Both are tremendous opportunities to hone your skills, whether seasoned artist or a newcomer to painting.  Both workshops are 3-day and cost $325 for members and $375 for non-members.  (As WAA membership is only $35 p.a., it pays to join)

Here is brief information on these two workshops:

BIGGER, FASTER, FRESHER, LOOSER PAINTING WORKSHOP
On Wednesday, July 22nd to Friday, July 24th, Winston-Salem painter, David Kessler will present an all-media workshop aimed to loosen up and paint more freely.  All who use watercolor, acrylic, pastel and oil are welcome.  You'll learn to loosen-up your painting style, paint with more freedom, be more spontaneous, be more expressive.  David is a well-known painter and a dynamic instructor who gives workshops all over the United States.

PAINTING STILL LIFE, LANDSCAPE, AND THE HUMAN HEAD IN WATERCOLOR
Our own watercolor master Betty Brown is treating us to a workshop on Tuesday, October 27th to Thursday, October 29th.  Students will need at least a minimal background in the watercolor medium.  Betty has vast experience as an award-winning exhibitor, juror and teacher in museum classes and workshops over forty years.  She is very well-known in the area as an excellent instructor.

More details on the programs and workshops later.  Supply lists will be available and PayPal payment will be online next month.

So come on and get to know fellow artists and our terrific group of friendly and creative people!

Carolina Beach Street Arts Festival: An Interactive Event

The 2015 Carolina Beach Street Arts Festival will be held Saturday May 16 from 10-5. It is a free to the public event with more than one hundred artists providing exhibitions, performances, and many hands-on activities. It builds upon the arts community to bring people into the creative processes so they can better understand and appreciate the many expressions of art.

There will be three interactive areas - visual, performing, and culinary arts.

Visual Arts - Artists will have their fine arts and crafts available for sale, and many will demonstrate their creative processes. Festivalgoers may find beautiful sculpture, glasswork, paintings, and jewelry.

Culinary Arts - This will feature cooking demonstrations and educational programs by local chefs, restaurants and shops. Uncle Vinny's will demonstrate the proper way to throw a pizza pie, and Sweet Morning Farm will show how to make artisan bread in five minutes!

Performing Arts - Performances will include Chaquis, an up and coming blues singer, songwriter/singer/one woman band, Beaches and Boots line dancers, Cape Fear Dance Studio, and other local performers.

Feature Event - This is a community made collage directed by Lynette Ashby and Ann Krier, locally known collage artists. Festivalgoers can help create a beautiful collage picture while learning the process for paper art.

eblast ps

Co-president Liz Hosier received this from Art Exposure notifying her of the death of an artist and WAA member.

Our long time artist and friend Lynn Padgett passed away on Tuesday.  Lynn was dedicated to her passion with watercolor, and the community truly recognizes their home town artist.
We will miss her dearly.

Her service was held Saturday.

WORKSHOP IN SOUTHPORT

Summer Regional Show 2 D Workshop  June 1 – 3, 2015
“Romancing your Muse” Mixed Media Collage with Vae Hamilton"

This workshop is about finding your direction and the time to go there.  It’s about fun collage and painting techniques, letting go and enjoying the mediums and how to create new and exciting textures using unconventional techniques.  The class will be coloring tissue papers, preparing collage material with magazine pages and metal polish, creating pealed–paper backgrounds and how to use photo transfer methods using family and friend’s photos. Vae will help you to hone motivational skills, something you’ve always wanted to know about.  She is anything but traditional so if you are in a rut and want to step out or just want to investigate an old friend called collage you’ll be fully inspired.

Vae Hamilton attended Western Illinois University and the University of Colorado majoring in Art.  She is featured in Gerald Brommer’s book, “Collage Techniques”, as well as creating the cover art for “Branches, Volume 10” receiving the 2001 Editor’s Choice Award.
